For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 2 Peter 1:16-20

From December 2019 events around the world have put most people on edge. Many have quipped, is this not the end of the world? The multiplicity of events, from the pandemic to the economic disruptions it triggered to the weather disruptions causing unprecedented fire outbreaks to mudslides and earthquakes, have jolted people to the reality that something ominous is afoot. But alas, whereas the conjecture may be so, most reject the source that can give not just clarity to the events but rest from the disquiet that reigns in many a heart. In our text for today, Apostle Peter declares in verse 16 “we have not followed cunningly defined fables when we made known to you the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ…”

The scriptures in its entirety is about Jesus Christ (John 5:39) and they tell us precisely what to expect and that’s why Peter concludes in verse 19, that we do well to take heed to prophecy as unto a light that shines in a dark place. In the darkness of the times, knowledge and understanding of prophecy will keep you from stumbling. Neal Vincent Frisby wrote that the impact of prophetic knowledge (of this book) will inspire the reader to:

  1. respond to a compelling motivation to endeavour to attain to the goal of the overcomer (Revelation 2:7, 17, 26; Revelation 3:5, 12, 21). Overcoming is a condition precedent to the rewards of Christ; and will require
  2. Operating in realms of faith never known before.

If these things be so, shouldn’t you take bible prophesies seriously? Selah
